Most patients’ main concern is whether dental surgery will hurt. We’re often asked questions how painful is the procedure? Or will I feel discomfort after the surgery? Oral surgery can be particularly off-putting if it means a painful procedure and days of agony. But fear not...we’re here to put your mind at rest and answer some of your most common questions around dental implants.
Most people are afraid to make the jump from dentures to dental implants, due to the pain associated with implant surgery.
But in reality, dental implants are far more comfortable and hygienic than dentures. Dentures are prone to slip out of place, when you eat, chew or talk, which can result in infection.
Will I Experience Pain During Dental Implant Surgery?
While dental implant surgery involves drilling and screwing, it’s a pain-free process. We use a local anesthetic to numb the area and avoid any pain. We can also provide sedatives for additional comfort, but these are rarely needed.
Will I Experience Pain After the Surgery?
Oral surgery can be slightly discomforting following a restoration, but most patients report the pain is manageable. Any discomfort should only last for a couple of days at most. If it hasn’t subsided after a week, contact your dentist.
How to Avoid Any Discomfort.
While the process is practically pain-free, these helpful tips can boost your chances of success and help the surgical site to heal.
- Avoid brushing or chewing around the implant area for the first 2-3 days.
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen.
- Rinse 2-3 times a day with a salt and warm water solution.
